Day 75 (19th Feb) Friday. Today I am heading off with Kaytlin to a school said to be about 30min away where we will teach an English lesson. We have a Khmer translator with us which makes things a lot easier.
We left at 9:00am with me on the back of the motto, dust flying everywhere on gravel roads and we hit traffic. Now in Cambodia driving rules are kind of “do what you like”. So when there’s a gap you go for it, whether that means you drive on the sidewalk or you drive down the ditch and up the other side to pass someone or if you drive straight through a stall on the side if the road. Oh and if you just some happen to be driving down the wrong side of the road apparently you have right of way so you just beep your way through traffic. It is so exhilarating but terrifying at the same time. In saying this I don’t think I would ever be able to drive here. Anyway so after an hour and a bit of the sun beating down on us, eating dust and stop go, my bum and inner thighs are so sore.
We arrive to a student waiting at the gate to lead us to the classroom, where we have 30 eyes of students looking up at me waiting for me to teach them. It was so cool teaching a new bunch of students at a real school that our 1 hour lesson kinda went on for 2 hours. The students were so kind they climbed up a dragon fruit tree in the school yard and picked it out for us to try and tack back on the motto.
An hour later we were back ……so sore and tired. All I wanted to do was go for a massage and lay down. The girls had put aside some lunch for us as we had now missed it. I prepared for my class and then taught again from 2:30-4:00pm.
Kaytlin was meeting a friend at the night market so we all went out to have a look around. On the way back we drove past a massive click in the ground at the base of a temple. It felt so free to be out driving through the streets of Phnom Phen, although by the time we were back my body definitely appreciated getting off that motto.
