Day 65 (9th Feb ) Cambodia day two : Woke up to a swarm of heat. Had breakfast then did my Bible readings for the day, then Laluen come over and took me out for a tour around the city on the back of a moped. I was still petrified at having a crash but I tried to easy up and just enjoy the scenery around me.
She took me to a number of markets, all the ones that were still open seeing it was Chinese New Year. We went through little alley ways that just kept on going. Every corner was filled with a new stall selling its own creations. I would have definitely got lost if she was not there to guide me out. She took me to all her favourite shopping spots and malls. It turns out changing your eye colour here is a big thing with shop after shop in the malls selling jars of contacts.
I saw the waterfront which is meant to be very pretty at night along the river. We came back to go out with Richard, another volunteer, who has been here for around 6 months already and Verity who has been here 3 weeks but is here for about 3 years. All of us walked 20 minutes to the Genocide museum memorial site of Taol Sleng. Which is a huge part if Cambodian history. It was the building where a man by the name of Pol Pot captured intelligent people (classified as those wearing glasses, engineers, doctors, school teachers etc) and in the end just innocent people and beat and tortured them and did just horrific things to them, to gain power. The building was originally a school that had been taken over. It was a bit much to take in but just tragic for all those people who went through it. There was less than 12 survivors out of thousands and all this occurring in 4 years between 1975 – 1979. So many of the parents of the people here would be affected.
I was feeling very dizzy, I don't think I had enough water so we called Don, the tuk tuk driver, to come pick us up. Dinner was at the House with the other girls who arrived tonight Carolyn and Jess. xx Kirsty Claire xx
