Read my full day to day blog of my first big overseas solo trip.
Day 74 (18th Feb ) Got up at 9:00, a late wake up call for myself. My body jolted as my eyes opened and realised what the time was. I had woken up an hour earlier but turned off my alarm and somehow fallen back to sleep. Even though my usual student at 9:30am had an exam I had a new student that had not yet done a class with another teacher before starting at 9:30.
I got ready so fast, raced down stairs in prefect timing to start class. He asked a lot of questions which was good but most were just general questions about life and had nothing to do with the topic we were learning. I finished class to not even get to the stairs before Rosie and Katlyin asked if I wanted to go out to a cafe.
On the tuk tuk I found out it was the cupcake shop I had gone to with the other girls but that was fine because at this stage I just wanted food as I had not had time to get breakfast before teaching. I had a smoothie which was amazing and a bite of Rosie's truffle cake pop which was so good I will have to order it next time if I go again.
I had a short break when we got back before preparing for my classes and having lunch. Afternoon class was long, very long. I had been talking for so long my throat hurt. They were not responding, I was trying so hard but the message was not getting through. I drew pictures on the board, let them refer back to khmer, but no just nothing. It was like talking to a blank space, just no response and to top it off I had them say they would prefer Carolyn their old teacher as my ascent was too hard to understand. Carolyn is a fully qualified teacher of course. She is going to be better at explaining things and apparently a South African mixed with a New Zealand accent is hard to understand. Well at this stage I just wanted to curl up and go to bed. I was so exhausted but I had to keep on going. I am obviously here for a reason and could not back out halfway through a lesson.
Straight after that lesson, that was like pulling teeth out of a cat I had another class for another whole hour. This was me done. I just wanted to go home, I was done !
Luckily this evening I had no class so I just took this time to have a breather, relax and not think about words and English at all. I had dinner and then we had a class at 8:30 -10 with all of us. Even though today didn't go so well I watched a short clip just before writing this which reminded me why I have come here. The video showed a blackboard asking people in the streets to write down their biggest regrets. If I had not come on this journey, if I had not come here to Cambodia to see for myself if I liked it or not, I would always be in regret mode, thinking what would of happened if I had come? Would I like it? Is teacher for me ? It would of always have been left as a question and now I am able to answer it.
