Slovenia is based in eastern Europe in between Austria and Croatia. Many also access on the way up from Italy. Its the perfect place for a weekend stop over to wind down from the busyness for European cities.
Ljubljana is seriously SO cute! I just loved the cute old buildings that lined the streets and river side. Its all painted pastel colours and has beautiful cobble stone streets. i would suggest just spending the day wondering around the lovely streets popping into a number of great shops that are still running.
THINGS TO DO:
PRESEREN SQUARE: In the middle of Ljubljana, Preseren’s statue sits its centerpiece. It is named after a great poet from non other than Slovenia its self. This square is full of stunning buildings the parlament building just behind me. The city is known for its beautiful bridges with me standing in the middle of a Triple Bridge, one of the city’s most significant landmarks. The plan was for them to add two more brides to the existing middle one to help with traffic flow from one side of the river to the other.
TAKE A STROLL ALONG THE BANKS OF THE LJUBLJANICA RIVER: This river flows right the way through the middle of the city. With beautiful willow trees overhanging the riverside.Pick a spot for a cup of tea or lunch down by the river and watch the day go by. There are may cafes that line the river so you will have plenty of options to choose. from. After pick yourself up a cheeky ice-cream and carry on strolling all the way down the river.
LOCAL MARKET: Ljubljana’s Riverside Market is full of amazingly fresh fruit and vegetables brought in straight from the farms, baskets, clothes and fresh flowers ready to be planted. This is a great place to grab some picnic supplies on a warm summer’s day.
LJUBLJANA CASTLE: Its a steep walk to get there but its do able with a few stops along the way. Only 20 mins or so tot he top. Unfortunately, the castle itself is a replica of the original built back during the 12th century and if your wanting to go into there is a fee of about 10 Euros but I would personally just go up for the views the stretch over the city
DAY TRIP TO LAKE BLED: This is a must! Its located only an hour bus ride away and the views on your walk around are just stunning! It was a bucket list item of mine and it did not disappoint at all! Its definitely the most beautiful and iconic sights of Slovenia. I would highly recommend taking a day trip or even better a weekend away to the lushes lake which is beautiful in all seasons. It was seriously one of the most beautiful places have ever visited! (link to full blog post to come)
